Who could deny the fact that oats and chocolate make a mouthwatering combo? These chocolate oat bites are definitely guilt free treats that’ll satisfy your sweet cravings in a healthy way.

Oats are well known for their nutritional qualities. It’s been a healthy substitute in both sweet and savory dishes for years. But unfortunately, oats have a very distinct taste that many consider really bland. So I’ve made them delicious by adding a natural sweetener – cocoa powder. And a dash of vanilla extract just turns this simple ingredient into something special.

Place butter, sugar, cocoa powder, milk and salt in a large pan. Then place the pan over high heat.

Bring the butter-cocoa mixture to a boil. Let it boil until the sugar dissolves completely. This will take a minute or so.

Now remove the butter-cocoa mixture from heat. Add vanilla extract. Mix well.

Add instant (quick cooking) oats.

Give it a good stir. At this stage, the mixture will look a bit watery. Now leave it to cool. While cooling, the oats will soak in the liquid mixture, and become firm enough to roll out balls.

Once cooled, you can roll balls out of the mixture.

  • ▢ ½ cup 1 stick or 113g unsalted butter, chopped
  • ▢ 1 cup white sugar
  • ▢ 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ▢ ½ cup milk
  • ▢ A pinch of salt
  • ▢ 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ▢ 3 cups instant quick cooking oats

Instructions

  • Place butter, sugar, cocoa powder, milk and salt in a deep pan over high heat. Bring it to a boil. Let it simmer for a minute, or until the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat.
  • Stir in vanilla extract. Then stir in oats. Mix well and set aside to cool.
  • Once cooled, the mixture will become dry and firm enough to roll out balls. Scoop out 1 tablespoon mixture and roll out into a ball. Repeat until all the oat mixture is used up.
  • Store chocolate oat bites in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
