Kakkayirachi Thoran/ Cockle Meat Stir Fry - 1

If someone asks me, “Which is your favorite Kerala dish?” I won’t be able to give a single answer, but Kakkayirachi thoran (Cockle Meat/ Clam Stir Fry) would definitely secure a place somewhere on top of the list. Well… that explains my love for this dish.

Kakka Irachi Thoran / Cockle Meat Stir Fry - 2

Ingredients

  • ▢ 200 g cockle meat or clams as they are called in some parts of the world, cleaned
  • ▢ ½ tsp mustard seeds
  • ▢ 1 1 shallot chopped
  • ▢ ¼ tsp ground turmeric
  • ▢ 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • ▢ 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • ▢ ¼ teaspoon chilli powder optional
  • ▢ ¼ teaspoon freshly grated black pepper
  • ▢ ¼ teaspoon garlic paste
  • ▢ ¼ teaspoon ginger paste
  • ▢ 4 tbsp desiccated coconut
  • ▢ Curry Leaves
  • ▢ Salt to taste

Instructions

  • Heat oil in a pan, and splutter mustard seeds.
  • Fry onion until golden brown.
  • Add garlic and ginger paste. Fry again.
  • Add the spices – ground turmeric, ground coriander, black pepper, chilli powder, and garam masala. Fry them along with grated coconut.
  • Throw in cleaned cockle meat and mix well.
  • Cover and cook.
  • Garnish with curry leaves and serve.
